SONJIA SMITH, LMFT, Therapy Associate
Approach to Therapy
Sonjia earned a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at Long Island University Brooklyn. She has advanced training in different models of marriage and family therapy approaches. She is also trained in trauma focused-CBT and crisis de-escalation. Most recently, she is training in AEDP, a trauma informed therapy. Her specialty is working with couples experiencing intimate partner violence.
Sonjia invites her clients to bring their faith into the therapy room by feeling into and leaning upon their personal faith in Jesus as the foundation for healing their wounds. She works from a systemic perspective which considers the clients life experience and multigenerational family patterns . In her counseling with families, couples and individuals of all ages, she aims to provide a safe collaborative environment where her clients can learn, grow and realize their therapeutic goals.
Sonjia is a cisgender woman, born and raised in NYC. She brings to Heartmatters Counseling NYC, her experience and a heart for working with couples and families in crisis supporting them on their journey to peace and empowerment. She is currently looking for a new church home.
Sonjia holds a Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy from Long Island University, Brooklyn NY. 2019
