Approach to Therapy
Sonjia earned a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at Long Island University Brooklyn. She is trained in modern and post-modern marriage and family therapy approaches which include multigenerational family therapy, structural family therapy, narrative therapy and solution- focused therapy. She is also trained in trauma focused-CBT and crisis de-escalation. She has advanced training in couples therapy from The Training Institute for Mental Health in NYC. Currently, she is training in AEDP, a trauma informed therapy.
She works from a systematic perspective which considers the context of client’s current life experience in addition to multigenerational family pattern influences. In her counseling with families, couples and individuals of all ages, she aims to provide a safe collaborative environment where her clients can learn, grow and realize their therapeutic goals.
Sonjia is active in the children’s ministry at her local church teaching elementary and junior high school aged children. Sonjia brings to Heartmatters Counseling NYC, her experience of working with children and families in crisis supporting them on their journey to peace and empowerment.
Sonjia holds a Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy from Long Island University, Brooklyn NY. 2019
